Concerts in observance of the 300th anniversary of the publication of Bach’s Well-tempered Clavier continue at Georgetown Lutheran Church on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 4 pm. Organist Stephen Ackert will perform two preludes and fugues from the Clavier and explore a connection between the music of Bach and that of the late 19th-century French composer César Franck. The link is Alexandre Pierre François Boëly, a mid-19th-century composer who emulated Bach and influenced Franck.
Bach: Preludes and Fugues in D Minor and G Minor; Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, BMV 606; Das alte Jahr verganden ist, BMV 614
Boëly: Sus bergers en campagne; Voici la premiére entrée; Lyre ce n’est pas en ce chant
Franck: Offertoire sur un noël Breton; Chorale no. 3 in A Minor
The church’s tracker organ, built by Richard Howell, is tuned to a historic temperament that Bach would have identified as “well-tempered.”
A free-will offering will benefit the Georgetown Lutheran Church music program. The church is at 1556 Wisconsin Ave. NW.
